How do you prepare for a job fair?

Last modification : 05/27/2025 12:05 PM

Taking part in a recruitment fair is a unique opportunity to meet recruiters and companies directly, to discover professional opportunities and, why not, to land an interview.

But to make the most of this event and maximise your chances of success, careful preparation is essential. What are the essential elements to anticipate? How should you approach the recruiters? How can you turn the day to your advantage? Follow our advice to prepare for your participation in a job fair.

Update and adapt your CV

Take the time to update your online CV before the big day. Add a clear title indicating the position you are applying for, the type of contract you would like (permanent, fixed-term, work placement, sandwich course) and your availability. This information will tell recruiters whether your profile matches their requirements.

Don't forget to optimise your profiles on professional networks, especially LinkedIn. They should be consistent with the information you present on your CV.

Finally, print out a sufficient number of CVs, with a few extra copies to make sure you don't run out. Keep them in a folder to avoid creasing.

Define your career plan

It's important to know what you're looking for before you come. This will help you target the companies and opportunities that are right for you.

Ask yourself the right questions:

  • What jobs are you interested in?
  • What type of contract are you looking for?
  • What are your short- and long-term goals?

Also think about the sector of activity that interests you and the skills you want to develop. This will help you show recruiters that you have thought your project through and that you have the necessary determination.

Find out about the companies taking part

Consult the list of companies taking part in the trade show, generally available on the event website, and identify those that are of particular interest to you.

Do your research on their websites and social networks to find out more about their news, values, recent projects and the profiles they are looking for. This will enable you to tailor your pitch and ask relevant questions.

Prepare a list of the companies you want to visit as a priority and note down the key information for each one. This will help you organise your day and avoid wasting time when you get there.

Prepare a presentation pitch

You'll only have a few minutes to grab people's attention. To stack the odds in your favour, prepare an elevator pitch.

This short sales pitch should last between 30 seconds and 1 minute. Start with your name, education or current position. Continue with your key skills and most relevant experience. Finish by clearly expressing your objective and your interest in the company.

Practise reciting your pitch with confidence so that you can deliver it naturally to recruiters.

Check logistical information the day before

Check the start and finish times of the event, as well as the exact location. Work out the route in advance (by car or public transport) to avoid any delays or unforeseen events.

You should also consult the exhibition map, if available online. Make a note of the stand numbers of the companies you want to meet and plan your route to make the most of your time at the show.

Finally, prepare your equipment: print out several copies of your CV and take a notepad and pen to jot down important information or contacts.

Prepare professional clothing

Choose professional clothing appropriate to the sector of activity you are targeting. A well-groomed appearance reflects your seriousness.

For formal sectors (finance, law, etc.), opt for a classic outfit, such as a suit or tailor's suit. In more creative or informal areas (communications, marketing, start-ups, etc.), you can choose slightly more casual attire.

Accessories should be discreet and not overpower your appearance. Don't forget to choose comfortable shoes, as you'll probably be on your feet or on the move for most of the day.

Don't hesitate to ask recruiters for their contact details

At the end of each conversation with a recruiter, remember to ask for their contact details. This way you can keep in touch and follow up after the show. Make a note of their name, position, professional e-mail address and, if possible, their telephone number.

To facilitate this exchange, you can also provide your own business cards. They should include your name, telephone number, e-mail address and a link to your LinkedIn profile.

If the recruiter can't give you their contact details, ask if they can be contacted via LinkedIn or another official channel.

Send a thank-you email after the show

The day after the show, send a thank-you email to the recruiters you met. This simple gesture shows your professionalism, your motivation and your interest in the company.

In your message, thank the recruiter for the time they gave you and for the information you shared during your discussion. Briefly remind them of who you are by mentioning something that stands out from your discussion.

If necessary, you can re-attach your CV or any other relevant document. Finish with a professional greeting, remaining open to future contact.
